The operating requirement

A campus runs beyond normal business hours and combines residences, classrooms, public events, laboratories, offices and open pedestrian routes. Officers encounter access issues, alarms, wellness concerns, conflict and sensitive personal situations. The role requires sound judgment and communication, not simply physical presence.

The service model

Northeastern provided a campus security program supported by site-specific post orders, trained personnel, supervision and incident reporting. Campus service must coordinate with the institution’s own administration, facilities, residence, accessibility and emergency procedures while preserving a professional and approachable public presence.

Questions institutions should ask

  • How will officers be selected for judgment, communication and public interaction?
  • What campus-specific training is completed before independent assignment?
  • How are wellness, medical, access and conduct incidents escalated?
  • Who reviews reports for patterns that require a policy or physical-security change?
  • How are special events, exams, residence activity and seasonal schedules handled?

Institutional guarding should be evaluated as a managed service with clear outcomes, not a uniform at a desk.
